Tomorrow will be the assault!

Great World War Tour

The First World War is the theme of this tour and in spite of the serious subject there is an optimistic tone. In fact, those who are familiar with the grandiose alpine landscape of the Dolomites will tell you the meaning of the word freedom.

Austrian mountain troops and the German Alpine corps along with the Italian ‘Alpini’ were present here from May 1915 until November 1917, engaged in a bitter struggle for survival. At the epicentre of the fighting, Col di Lana, the tour passes under the cliff walls of those famed peaks like Civetta, Monte Pelmo, Tofana, Lagazuoi, Conturines, Settsass, Sassongher, Sella and Marmolada.

We’re talking about a day out on those breathtakingly beautiful slopes for all the family. The run from Lagazuoi to Armentarola and the Punta Rocca run (over the Marmolada glacier towards Malga Ciapela) are particularly spectacular.

The Ski Civetta skiing resort is a frequent and superlative starting point. You can also set off on your tour from S. Cassiano, Corvara, Arabba and Malga Ciapela.

An open air museum

As far as beauty and spectacular mountain summit views are concerned, one need look no further than the renowned Sellaronda on this freedom tour. Including time for lunch you’ll be on the move for up to 7 or 8 hours; one can follow the way either in a clockwise or anti clockwise direction and will cover almost 100 kilometres in doing so, a good half of the day being completed on skis and the rest divided between lifts and ski buses.

A romantic trip by horse sleigh ride is also included for good measure. At the numerous memorial points as well as museums along the way there are touching reminders of the notion of freedom. Historical documents show the fate of the soldiers, whose greatest enemy was often not the enemy in itself but the hard mountain winter. Many lines and trenches have been made presentable – for example at Lagazuoi – and they exist these days as open air museums for visitors. Experienced tour guides know the best vantage points.

The tour can be done easily in one day, without removing your skis and passing through the four Ladin valleys: Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa and Arabba. It can be done clockwise or anticlockwise, starting from any of the four valleys. Clockwise the colour of the signposting is orange, anticlockwise it is green. It covers a total distance of 40 km, 26 of which are ski slopes. The Sellaronda tour can be done by skiers of intermediate level.

Warning: It is advisable to reach the final Pass by 3.30 pm, since otherwise reaching your final destination could become difficult. In the event of bad weather (snow or strong wind) some lift facilities might be closed.

Ski Tour Tre Valli

Experience a Tour of Emotions in the famous ski resort Tre Valli with the villages Moena, Lusia, Passo San Pellegrino and Falcade where exciting views of the Dolomite peaks will follow one another. The tour leads through the natural park of Paneveggio, where on skis you will pass close to traditional wooden huts (known as Tabià) and numerous chalets and ski bars, ideal to enjoy a rest.

You can begin the tour in Moena-Ronchi/Alpe Lusia, Passo San Pellegrino, Falcade or Bellamonte. If you choose to start from Falcade, two fast chairlifts will take you to the Plateu, then you will come down to the Pian della Sussistenza and a modern chairlift will take you up to the Laresei where you can take a break, try some of the local delicacies and enjoy the views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks.

On your way down to the next lift that will take you to Col Margherita, you will, at an altitude of 2,514 m, have a 360° view of the most impressive landscapes of the entire Monti Pallidi area. From this privileged location you will be able to see the Civetta and the Pelmo peaks, the south side of the Marmolada, the mountain chain of the Catinaccio with the Vajolet towers, the Monzoni group and many other summits of the Val di Fassa.
After a breathtaking downhill on the slope that for several years now has been the end of season host for the famous Giant Slalom (‘Gigantissimo’) of the Tre Valli, you will reach the San Pellegrino pass, paradise for families and for beginners. Here you can either ski down on the exciting Cima Uomo slope or take the new chairlift Costabella and descend on the Monzoni slopes.

A free skibus will take you in 15 minutes to the starting point in Moena-Ronchi/Alpe Lusia; from here with two fast lift facilities you will reach the ‘Cune’ at 2,210 metres, with fantastic, technically challenging slopes such as the Direttissima, the Lastè, the Mediolanum. There is also a great snowpark and boarder cross, for those who like strong emotions on the board or skis.

After the downhill to Campo, you can continue along a gentle skiway that will take you, amongst huts and chalets, to Castellir di Bellamente, where another free skibus will take you in approximately 20 minutes to the Valles pass. From here you will descend for approximately 7 km on the famous slope of the ‘Lovers’, taking in once again all the natural beauty of the landscape surrounding you.
